The latest Nikon macro prime lens put to the test: Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G

Tuesday October 11 2011

This brand new all-purpose prime lens is great for general photography with a DX camera, especially if you want to take close shots from time to time. At $300, it can be a very good choice if it performs well.

Nikon 40mm f/2.8 DX Micro test results

We tested the Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G on the Nikon D7000 and the results are very good. This lens is very sharp with a resolution score of 49 lp/mm, and quite homogenous on the whole field. Distortion and vignetting are almost nonexistent. And the chromatic aberrations are very few — in fact, invisible in the field.

Nikon 40mm f/2.8 DX Micro vs other Nikon prime lenses

If we compare it with the latest G prime lenses by Nikon, the Nikon 40mm f/2.8 DX Micro maintains its scores for good resolution and for low vignetting and distortion. This compensates for relatively lower brightness, resulting in the 3 lenses achieving a similar overall score.

Nikon 40mm f/2.8 DX Micro vs Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro

In comparing this Nikon lens with its Canon closest equivalent, the excellent Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, we can see that both lenses achieve very similar scores in all aspects.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G offers very good image quality at a price ($300) that makes it a very good choice if you’re looking for an all-purpose lens for your APS-C.
