Lens Sharpness Options
By the way DxOMark, the Canon f2 IS USM lens is shown in the sharpness field map results as being measured at f1.4 although the accompanying text does relate to f2 -needs a small edit.
My conclusion from the sharpness test is that the top three lenses all have about the same sharpness at f4. The only material difference is how they fare at wider apertures. Could this not be used to advantage though? If one had a small subject in the centre of the image and wanted to isolate it from the background using f1.4, wouldn't the Zeiss come out on top as all else in the frame would not only be out of focus but also unsharp? Is sharp bokeh better or worse than unsharp bokeh?! If knowing the characteristics of the lens thanks to DxOMark, doesn't the Zeiss offer more creative options? Hello!
Thanks for your interest in DxOMark. Depth of field is not taken into account for sharpness score. This ranking provides you with the sharpest lens without taking into account other aspects. If depth of field is an important aspect, you can filter the ranking with our filter tool and select lenses with the maximum aperture you need. For wide aperture one other score which could be more helpful is the DxOMark score. This score is computed for a lowlight condition, so the sharpest lenses at wider aperture will be the best ranked. Lens sharpness
I'm mystified by the degree of sharpness between lenses' scores. How much sharper is say a 5 point difference? What score is going to make a material difference in practice? Are we talking pixel level or at a print level and at what size print etc? As a newbie is there a key description anywhere in the website I've missed?

What a "roundup"
Last I checked, Pentax was a major player in the DSLR (and DEFINITELY the optics) department. It would have been nice to see them included.

35mm prime lens round up
bit stupid that the canon ef 35mm f1.4L is not included in this comparison. And I feel that something should be said about build quality and AF performance when talking about lenses. Good optical performance is not the only thing to be considered
