Since the launch of the DxOMark website, many debates have arisen about ISO sensitivity: Some manufacturers were accused of cheating, the ISO sensitivity measured by DxOMark was claimed to be meaningless for photographers. The DxOMark team would like to clarify certain points. The review is available here. |

No surprise: DxOMark scores show Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 equal to GF1 DxO Mark has gotten around to benchmarking the sensor used in Panasonic’s new Lumix DMC-GF2, which despite having an ISO range of 6400 (1 stop more than the GF1), still features the same sensor powering its predecessor, the GF1... DxOMark sensor for benchmarking cameras But my impression is that the benchmark is pretty useful: I analyzed the model and the data, but didn’t find any serious flaws. Furthermore, results like Figure 2 appear to be pretty consistent with traditional hands-on reviews: models that were stronger [weaker] than state-of-the-art when they were introduced (such as the Canon 40D [50D]) show up as expected in the DxOMark data. And, again, having a pretty solid metric by an independent party is better than endless discussions about what an ideal metric might look like... Read the article. Read the article |

Adorama's buying guide is based on DxOMark data Test results are a new feature to this article, and are based on objective measurements provided by DxOMark's state-of-the art camera test facility, with their permission. Each camera's sensor is measured for color depth (which indicates how smooth the transitions are between colors), dynamic range (the range of visible detail in shadows through bright highlights in the same scene), and low-light ISO. Low-light ISO determines which is the highest ISO that will produce acceptable levels of digital noise in an image. I present the data along with an explanation which is intended to help you understand each camera's performance. Note that we do not yet have results for all cameras listed here but as new cameras are tested we will add that information... Read the article. Read the article |

DxOMark publishes LX5 sensor data! So it’s nice to see that the LX5 stats are improved over the LX3s in every way. And the fact that the Canons’ sensors still outperform the LX5 pretty much across the board - though, not by a huge margin - doesn’t surprise me much. I’m sometimes finding the details in the LX5 to be more crunchy. But none of these cameras’ images can be made into large fine-art prints anyway. These are fun, take-it-with-you cameras that can’t take the place of a DSLR... Read the article. Read the article |
