Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC AE Preview: Updated 35mm prime lens for Canon

Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC AE Specification: Electronic Aperture Control for Samyang wide-angle prime

Originally launched in 2010 the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC is a ‘fast’ aperture wide-angle prime lens for the Nikon and Canon lens mount. While the original lens featured an aperture ring on the barrel for controlling apertures, this new version has been updated with an ‘AE’ chip for electronic communication between camera and lens. This means aperture values will now be controlled electronically via the camera body, and ensures photographers can use the focus indicator light in the viewfinder to check focusing. In all other aspects the updated lens remains the same as the original and continues to be manual focus only. Construction features 12 elements in 10 groups, with 1 aspherical lens, a minimum focus distance of at 30cm, 77mm filter thread and apertures between f/1.4 – f/22. With the addition of a Canon ‘AE’ version, Samyang now offer the 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC AE lens in both Nikon and Canon lens mounts, but there are currently no plans for a Sony, Pentax, or Four Thirds version.
