Summary
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces Apple’s latest flagship camera system, with a stronger emphasis on giving users greater control over image capture while building on the computational photography foundations of previous Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro features a new 48 MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture, marking the first time Apple has brought adjustable aperture control to an iPhone. Using a six-blade mechanism, the aperture can automatically adapt to lighting and depth-of-field requirements, while users can also manually select from four aperture settings. The camera experience has also become more oriented toward advanced users, with new Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, as well as a histogram for monitoring exposure. Photographic Styles now offer additional texture and grain controls, giving users more flexibility over the final look of their images. Video capabilities have also received several refinements, including Smart Focus for more intelligent subject tracking and focus transitions, post-capture Cinematic effects, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse and updated Audio Mix processing. A new Reference Image system also provides a signed, unalterable version of a photograph for verification. We’ll be putting the iPhone 18 Pro through a full camera evaluation in our labs to assess image quality, variable-aperture performance, computational processing, zoom, low-light photography and video. Stay tuned.
