Pros
- Neutral white balance with natural-looking colors
- Good detail preservation and low noise in bright conditions
- Good performance in scenes with mild HDR
Cons
- Visible noise in indoor and low-light conditions, particularly during motion
- Occasional loss of fine detail in low-light conditions
- Occasional artifacts, including ghosting
- Underexposed faces in very dark conditions
In our comprehensive evaluation of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8-inch, the camera delivers a generally balanced performance, particularly in bright lighting conditions where it combines natural-looking colors with good detail preservation and controlled noise levels.
One of the key aspects delivered by the Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8-inch is its neutral white balance, which allows colors to remain natural and pleasant across the tested conditions. In bright environments, the camera is able to preserve a good level of detail while maintaining low noise, resulting in a clean and well-balanced image for standard video conferencing use cases. The device also shows good performance in slight HDR scenes, maintaining a reasonable balance between brighter and darker areas.
However, performance becomes less consistent as lighting conditions become more challenging. In indoor and low-light scenes, strong noise can sometimes be visible, particularly on moving subjects. Some loss of fine detail is also noticeable in low-light conditions, while occasional image artifacts, including ghosting, can affect the overall rendering during motion. In very dark conditions, faces can also become underexposed, resulting in a reduction in facial detail and overall image quality.
Overall, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 13.8-inch provides a solid camera experience in bright and moderately challenging conditions, with its neutral white balance, good detail preservation and low noise being among its main strengths. Its performance is less convincing in low-light and motion scenarios, where noise, detail loss and face exposure become more noticeable.

About DXOMARK Camera Laptop tests
DXOMARK evaluates the image quality of the built in camera during video calls, whether with a single person or with multiple people, in a variety of lighting conditions. Our camera evaluation particularly assesses the ability of the built-in camera to clearly render human faces during video calls. Other intrinsic camera quality aspects are also evaluated, like color reproduction, texture and noise, as well as artefacts.
